Top Designers - Issey Miyake

Miyake Kazumaru was born in Hiroshima, Japan in 1938. He studied graphic design in Tokyo, graduating in 1964. After gaining practical experience, working for Guy Laroche; Givenchy and later on for Geoffrey Beene, he established the Miyake Design Studio in 1970 showing his own label at the Paris Collections in 1973.
Issey Miyake's designs are an art form, but it is their wearer who gives it life & movement, creating another art form. His belief has always been the idea of creating a garment from 'one piece of fabric, exploring the space between body and fabric, combining eastern & western influences in his designs while balancing tradition and modernism, handcrafts and new technology. In the late 80s, he began experimenting with new methods of pleating, and in 1993 "Pleats Please" was formed, a practical widespread variety of contemporary designs combining beauty, functionality and technology.

Issey Miyake retired from the fashion world in 1997, passing the torch to Naoki Takizawa who has been with him since 1989. True to his master's art form, Naoki Takizawa continues Issey Miyake's legacy. He left the fashion house after launching his own label. Dai Fujiwara took over the creative position of Issey Miyake in January 2007 making his debut in Paris in February 2007.
